Dr. Ellen Kreidman 1.The Shy Type There are many people who say I'm scared of meeting new people. I don't know how to act, what to say and I say, You have to FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY. Whether you are 18 or 80, meeting new people can be scary. Your heart beats faster, your adrenaline starts to flow, but you're alive instead of walking around like a zombie. I saw a funeral parlor sign that said, "Why walk around half alive, for $300 we'll bury you!" And that's what most of us are like BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER, WORK. Like zombies. The more people you attract, and go out with, THE MORE CHOICES YOU HAVE, the more comfortable you'll be with who you are, what you're looking for, and the better chance you'll have of meeting that perfect mate. 2. The Battle-Scarred Type Just because someone's had a bad experience in one relationship is no reason to think that they can't be happy in another one. Many people have lost a love, only to find a greater love than the one they lost. Your PAST relationships prepare you for your FUTURE RELATIONSHIPS. The lessons you've learned make you a better person and help you make better choices. 3. The Picky Type I think that the better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to be "picky." You won't settle for less than you deserve. And you shouldn't have to. What a "picky" person is really saying is, "I have a certain picture of what my perfect mate will be like, and the person I'm dating is not it! I will continue dating until I find them." I think that's healthy. What advice do you give a single parent who is ready to date? 4. The Single Parent The best gift you can give your children is a happy, healthy role model. If you are waiting for your child's permission to date you'll never get it. Children want you to be with them 24 hours a day, but they also want Mc Donald's for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so regardless of what they want, the last thing they need is to have a mom or dad who has no social life and no adult to share their life with. So the most important thing you can do is be honest with your children as well as with the people you are dating. You are a package deal and be proud of it. 5. The "Happy to be Single" Type I'm sure that's how they feel now but it doesn't mean that's how they will feel forever. I think it's mistake for us to be called human beings. I think we should be called human "becomings" instead. We are not static. We are always changing. I've met men and women who felt that they never wanted a baby and then a couple of years later, they do. I've met people who said that they finally bought their dream home and they were never moving only to find that years later they do. I also know people who can't wait to get out of school and say they will never go back, and years later they are going for a Master's Degree. So just because someone feels that they want to be alone now, does not mean that they will feel like that next year or even next month. We are allowed change our minds and when someone does, the information they need on how to meet their perfect mate will be there. |
